The Whitmore-Saint Claire Medical Center was on full alert. By the time Emily’s helicopter landed on the roof, a team of top specialists was waiting.
“Heart rate is elevated,” the head doctor said as they rushed her down the private corridor. “We need to keep her calm. The stress from the attack triggered early labor.”
Emily gripped the sides of the gurney, squeezing her eyes shut as another massive contraction hit her. It felt like her body was splitting in two.
Uncle Raymond was walking briskly beside the gurney, his face a mask of iron, though his eyes betrayed his deep fear for her. “I’m right here, Em. You’re safe. He is in police custody. He will never, ever get near you again.”
“Uncle Ray,” Emily panted, grabbing his strong hand. “Don’t let him… don’t let him have any rights to my son.”
“I have already stripped his parental rights via the court order for his assault charge,” Raymond assured her, kissing her forehead. “He is legally a ghost. Focus on you. Focus on the baby.”
They wheeled her into the grand delivery suite.
For the next six hours, Emily fought. She fought through the excruciating pain, the exhaustion, and the lingering trauma of the past few months. Every time she felt she was too weak to push, she remembered Vanessa’s heel. She remembered Preston’s cruel eyes telling her not to embarrass him.
She turned that pain into power. She was not a victim. She was a Saint Claire.
“One more big push, Emily!” the doctor encouraged, seeing the monitors spike. “You’re doing incredible! Push!”
Emily let out a fierce, guttural cry, pouring every ounce of her remaining strength, her heartbreak, and her hope into one final push.
And then, the room filled with the most beautiful sound in the world.
A loud, healthy, furious wail.
Emily fell back against the pillows, gasping for air, tears streaming down her face.
The nurses quickly cleaned the baby, wrapping him in a soft, warm blanket before placing him gently onto Emily’s bare chest.
Emily looked down at her son. He had a shock of dark hair and perfect, tiny fingers. He was small, but he was breathing perfectly, his little chest rising and falling against hers.
“Hello, little one,” Emily whispered, kissing his forehead, completely overwhelmed by a wave of pure, unconditional love. “I’ve got you. Mommy’s got you.”
Raymond stood in the doorway, wiping a single, rare tear from his eye. He walked over and gently touched the baby’s tiny hand.
“What is his name, Emily?” Raymond asked softly.
